Controversial Kanye West Video Creator Stands by AI Celeb Depictions

The co-creator of a viral video featuring AI-generated celebrities to protest Kanye West’s antisemitism is defending his decision to use the stars' likenesses without permission.

In an interview released on February 13, Guy Bar, the Israeli founder of AI tech hub Elevaitor, expanded on his earlier comments about the video’s creation. The video caused a stir when it was released earlier this week, showcasing Jewish A-listers wearing white shirts and condemning West for his history of antisemitic remarks and his attempt to sell a swastika T-shirt. When asked by The Jewish Chronicle (video below), “Many of the celebrities in the video haven’t actually spoken out against antisemitism. Was there a specific choice to use these celebrities over Jewish activists?” Bar responded:

“It had to be done very quickly. If you wait after the T-shirt controversy, it wouldn’t be relevant. You need to make fast decisions. These are the most famous Jewish celebrities in the world, and they’re highly relevant to Kanye West’s world. Ideally, the real people would be involved in the video, using their own voice. I wish they would share it and say, ‘We agree with this video, and we want to spread it.’”

Bar’s justification received mixed reactions. One person wrote, “I love the video, but they needed permission.” Another commenter stated, “No matter how important this video or message may be, using the images of people who haven’t consented is wrong. Anyone could pull someone into a campaign they’ve never agreed to. The creator of the video thinks he can play God with AI, justifying whatever he does. It’s a strange paradox of fighting a celebrity Nazi with an unethical form of representation.”
