Drew Barrymore Reveals She's Been Told to 'Back Off' for Being Too 'Touchy' with Guests

Drew Barrymore and Cynthia Erivo both recognize the power of physical communication, understanding that it can be just as meaningful as words.
During Tuesday’s episode of The Drew Barrymore Show, the 37-year-old Wicked actress shared that she and her costar Ariana Grande are often physically close, using touch to subtly communicate during their conversations.
"Is it true that [Grande] is as touchy? I'm so touchy,” Barrymore admitted. “People have to warn me, saying, ‘Back off a little bit.’ And I’m like, ‘Why?’"
Barrymore's interview style, which includes frequent hugs and hand-holding with guests, has drawn both praise and criticism from viewers. The 49-year-old host has since acknowledged that she’s working on maintaining a bit more “physical distance” with guests in the current season of her show.
However, Erivo had no issue with Barrymore’s tendency to reach out, holding her hand throughout their chat. “I’m the welcoming Capricorn,” Erivo joked. “It’s like, ‘I love you. You can touch.’”
Erivo also revealed that after spending so much time filming Wicked and traveling for the press tour, she’s become accustomed to always being physically connected with Grande. "If [we're] not connected, I’m like, ‘What’s wrong? Where are you?’" she said. "We walk hand-in-hand a lot. If we’re not walking hand-in-hand, we’ll find each other somewhere.”
Barrymore seemed to love this idea. “That’s how I want life to be,” she said. “Because physical connection… I’m single. I’m not dating anyone. I don’t have that in my life, but I don’t know how I would ever hold back from holding hands, hugging, snuggling.”
Erivo reflected on how fear can hinder physical connection. "I think we get a bit afraid of physical connection," she said. "We often assume it can only be romantic."
