Best Film at the BAFTAs: ‘Conclave’ Wins Big in a Surprising Awards Season Turnaround

Conclave claimed the Best Film title at the EE British Academy Film Awards on Sunday at the Royal Festival Hall in London, adding another twist to a tumultuous awards season where no single film has emerged as a clear frontrunner.

Directed by Edward Berger and starring Ralph Fiennes, Conclave is a thriller centered around the election of a new pope. The film earned four BAFTA wins on Sunday, also taking home awards for Best Editing, Best Adapted Screenplay, and Outstanding British Film.

In winning Best Film, Conclave triumphed over several strong contenders, including Sean Baker’s Anora, a dramedy about an exotic dancer marrying the son of a Russian oligarch; Brady Corbet’s The Brutalist, which follows a Jewish architect (Adrien Brody) rebuilding his life in the U.S. after the Holocaust; the Bob Dylan biopic A Complete Unknown; and Emilia Pérez.

Despite its BAFTA success, Conclave had not been a major player earlier in the season. It had won a single Golden Globe for Best Screenplay, while Emilia Pérez and The Brutalist claimed the spotlight at that event. More recently, the Best Picture Oscar race appeared to be leaning toward Anora, following its big wins at the Critics’ Choice Awards and the Directors Guild of America and Producers Guild of America ceremonies.

The 2025 BAFTA Awards, a celebration of the best in British cinema, took place on Sunday night, drawing Hollywood’s biggest stars to London’s Royal Festival Hall.
