Beauty Salon Staff Trained to Offer Support and Cancer Advice

Hair and beauty salon staff are receiving training to encourage clients to attend cervical cancer screenings and raise awareness about the disease’s symptoms.

The Humber and North Yorkshire Cancer Alliance is offering free courses in areas with low screening participation rates.

The goal of the training is to equip salon professionals with the tools to initiate conversations about cervical cancer with their clients.

According to NHS England, around 30% of those eligible for screening fail to attend. The Cancer Alliance highlights that two people die from cervical cancer every day in England, although 99.8% of cases are preventable.

The training covers the symptoms of cervical cancer and explains how the smear test works.

Salons in areas with the lowest screening rates, including Goole, Grimsby, Hull, Scarborough, and Scunthorpe, are also receiving posters and stickers to help spread awareness among customers.

Juliet McNab, owner of York House Beauty Clinic in Scarborough, expressed her support for the initiative, noting that she and several of her staff members have survived various types of cancer.

“My team and I share a deep bond from our experiences with cancer, and we consider ourselves fortunate to still be here,” she said. “We already strongly believe in the power of conversations about cancer, so when the Cancer Alliance reached out about their training, we were eager to get involved.”
